Discovery Days at the Museum of Nature and Science

On March 14th, 2009, DFW ASLA members participated in Discovery Days at the Dallas
Museum of Nature and Science.  This exhibit engaged children of all ages, educating them how new technologies and products are making homes and offices more energy efficient – while reducing pollution in the air and on the ground.  Participants learned about supporting structures and how to read building plans and create their own structure using recycled scrap materials.
At the ASLA booth, participants we able to design their own green roof.  Given a base map and
cut-out tree bases, children and adults learned what Landscape Architects are doing to make urban buildings green through green roofs, rainwater collection, and beneficial aesthetic elements.  ASLA’s booth was titled “Green Design in Action” and had hundreds of visitors
engage in the activities.

Boy Scout Merit Badge Day

January 2009
Members of the Dallas/Ft Worth section of ASLA participated in BoyScout Merit
Badge day.

A merit badge counselor is an integral part of the development in the Boy Scout program. Numerous professions and trades are taught to classes of scouts ranging in size from 10-20 per counselor. Scouts are taught the basics of each profession, including history; fields of study, profession based terminology as well as taking part in exercises to carry out the classroom lessons. Each program consists of around two hours of classroom lessons and two hours of field exercises in order to complete all the badge requirements.

The landscape architecture merit badge introduces many of these young men to a still developing field of study. A registered landscape architect typically teaches the scouts about the differences in the profession and how multiple fields of study are engrained in a successful landscape architect. Scouts participate in badge requirements such as plant identification and redesigning an entry way to allow for vehicular access, pedestrian access, and aesthetic value. At the conclusion of the session the boy scouts have learned valuable lessons about the practice of landscape architecture and are able to apply these lessons learned into their everyday life. _________________________________________________________________________________________________
