TIME TO VOTE – 2009 ASLA Texas Chapter Officers
It is that time again to vote for the 2009 ASLA Texas Chapter and Section Officers. Available again this year is Online Voting on our Texas ASLA website. As we become more sustainable and GREEN, we have stopped mailing out paper ballots. Therefore, the online voting is much easier and more economical for the use of Chapter funds. Voting closes Friday, August 29th, 2008 at 5pm. Results will be announced Friday, September 5th, 2008.
IMPORTANT! When you vote online, you will need:
- Your personal ASLA membership number. This will allow the Tellers Committee to validate and keep track of all votes and avoid duplicating a person’s single vote.
- Then you need to select your local Section Ballot. (Either the Austin Section, DFW Section, Houston/Gulf Coast Section, South Texas Section or West Texas Section). If you do not know what Section you are in, call Brad Moulton at 214-920-8125 or Randy Phillips at 214-920-8394.

CALL FOR PAPERS
2009 Texas ASLA Annual Conference
Austin April 15th-17th
The 2009 Texas ASLA Conference Committee offers ASLA members and related professionals the opportunity to submit a written proposal for an oral presentation with graphics at the 2009 Texas ASLA conference to be held in Austin , Texas on April 16-17, 2009.
Proposals will be selected for possible continuing education session presentations with the goal of educating fellow professionals with health, safety, and welfare criteria and providing the latest information on industry research, practices, and design.
The overall theme of the conference is “LANDSCAPES ON THE EDGE” in which we hope to focus on practices and projects in Texas likely to be considered mainstream in the coming years, but are currently not practiced widely. Many of the green or sustainable practices are examples and could include presentations on smart planning, green roofs, restoration, innovative infill development, and innovative stormwater management. While not necessarily new ideas, they are not frequently applied in Texas for reasons cultural and ecological.
Landscape case studies can encompass process, culturally significant sites, art in the landscape or residential design issues that can benefit the profession, the public and provide guidance to the future. Presentations may also address the process of a project or firm which encompasses many areas like marketing, contracts/pro-practice, design process, design development or construction.
Deadline: Written proposals including the application must be received by September 30, 2008 to be considered by the program committee (download the PDF application here).
TEXAS ASLA AND THE DFW CHAPTER WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE
Texas ASLA and the DFW Chapter would like to thank everyone for making the 2008 Annual Conference in Fort Worth a great success. We had the largest attendance ever for our state conference with almost 500 attendees. This year's vendor hall was also a large improvement from years past with over 100 vendors. The 2008 awards program was highlighted by a professionally designed book with descriptions and images of all award winning projects; a copy was given to those who attended the banquette. Look for the presentation to be added to the website in the near future.
SENATE CONSIDERING CLIMATE CHANGE
Contact Your Senators to Support New Legislation
The United States Senate is currently considering landmark legislation to address global climate change. You can help by contacting your Senators and asking them to support legislation that takes important steps to reduce our carbon emissions.
Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) has introduced S.3036, the "Manager's Amendment" to S.2191, the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act which would strengthen the legislation to achieve a 71% reduction in U.S. greenhouse gas emissions 2050 and provide substantial funding for mass transit and other non-motorized transportation alternatives. The "Manager's Amendment" also continues to provide funding for agriculture and forestry programs that help reduce carbon emissions.
You can find additional information on ASLA's position on climate change, by visiting our website. Please take this opportunity to contact your U.S. Senators to urge them to vote in favor of S. 3036 which takes important steps to create healthier communities and more sustainable environments.
